Grand Rapids- The official school closing plan for Grand Rapids Public Schools was unveiled at tonight's school board meeting, but it is far from a done deal. It's a tentative plan, affecting mostly elementary schools. The proposal involves 9 elementary schools, 4 of which could close. The schools under consideration are Congress, Fountain, Eastern, East Leonard, Kent Hills, Dickinson, Jefferson, Aberdeen and North Park. In addition to closing schools, the district is also considering moving City High School into Central High School's building. They say there are structural concerns with City High and the cost of the needed repairs. Officials are also talking about adjusting school boundaries, shifting where some students go to school. A committee has been working on the plan for several weeks. Now the proposal must go through several community review sessions on October 27th, November 3rd, and November 17th. Those review sessions will be followed by community forums during the week of November 28th and December 5th. Finally the community will make its recommendations to the board of education on December 19th. The board of education hopes to vote on a proposal on January 17th, 2006. District officials say the closings are necessary due to declining enrollment.
