Lansing - A campaign to eliminate the state Senate has failed. Members of Unicameral Michigan, the group behind the effort, said they did not collect enough signatures of qualified voters to place the issue on the November ballot. The deadline to turn in the more than 317,000 signatures required was Monday. Unicameral Michigan says that the state needs only one chamber in its Legislature. The group said the one-chamber structure would be efficient and cost less to run. Advocates of the two-chamber system say it has important advantages in the lawmaking process.
