Muskegon - the city's two historic hospitals are merging.
Representatives from Mercy General Health Partners and Hackley Hospital announced the merger Wednesday afternoon. They say it will create a $500 million health care system for the area.
For now, both hospitals will remain open and neither hospital is changing their name. Officials are expecting some job losses, but definitive numbers are not available at this time.
The hospitals cite the sluggish economy and health care competition from Grand Rapids as the key reasons to completing the merger.
