(BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER) - A handgun found by children near a car was returned to the owner, a Battle Creek man, 68.
Battle Creek police said a man living in the 100 block of North Broad Street said two children came to his door about 5:30 p.m. Thursday and said they found the handgun near a car parked in front of his house.
The man called police who learned that the gun belonged to a man living nearby. Officers took the five-shot revolver to the home to return the gun.
Officers said the man had a valid permit to carry the weapon.
The officer gave the man the gun, reminding him that it was loaded. Police said the man pointed the gun at the ground and began to clear it of ammunition when he accidentally fired a single shot into the ground.
No one was hurt and the gun was returned to the man.
