(WZZM) - If you used Google Wednesday you likely noticed its logo was tweaked to pay homage to the Zamboni. January 16, 2013 would have been Frank Zamboni's 112th birthday.

According to Google, Zamboni invented his namesake machine, after opening an ice skating rink with his brother. He was frustrated with how long it took a team of workers to lay down fresh ice so he created a resurfacer using auto parts.

Employees at Walker Ice and Fitness say the Zamboni is a necessity now that they use about once every hour.

"It's one of the nice luxuries ice rinks now have these days," says Jon Perz, program administrator at Walker Ice & Fitness.

The first Zamboni hit the ice in 1947 and took 15 minutes to clean the rink.
