WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) - It may be the middle of winter, but fruit flies don't seem to mind. The pesky bugs can come around anytime of the year and they've been plaguing us here at WZZM for the past week.
It got so bad we placed homemade traps around our building, filled with apple cider vinegar and dish soap. They attracted hundreds of fruit flies, but didn't eliminate the problem. We called in an expert.
John Koval from Smitter Pest Control confirmed they were fruit flies. "Yes, the reason you can tell the difference is that fruit flies have red eyes and they body is grayish."
We walked around the building looking for the source. We hit the jackpot in the garbage can. "See these banana peels? Ah, hundreds of them because of the fruit. The best you can do it get rid of it right away."
The recycling bin was also adding to the problem. "When you have pop, even a small amount on the bottom is going to attract fruit flies."
Not even the refrigerator is off limits to fruit flies. They can get inside and feed on any food or spills they can find.
Koval recommends emptying out all the garbage cans and doing a thorough cleaning. If you own a restaurant or bar, he says the best option is to call a professional.
