(WZZM) - Rivers across all of west Michigan are expected to reach their highest point sometime today.

The term "crest" refers to the peak point in the river basin which is measured at a specific point to represent the low point in the bed.

As with any body of water, the bottom of the basin in uneven so a level at one point does not mean that is a uniform height throughout the entire river.

That is why multiple points on the river may have different crest heights throughout this afternoon.
