The Sugarfree Cherry Limeade Slurpee
ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- It's the day when America gets a brain freeze -- 7-Eleven stores are marking the chain's 86th anniversary by giving away free Slurpees.
In previous years on July 11 the convenience store chain gave away 7.11 ounce cups of the frozen treat. This year on 7/11, each customer can get a free 12-ounce Slurpee -- between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Managers say it's their biggest day of the year.
"It literally is our national holiday -- 7/11," says Lauren Densmore, who managers the store on Alpine Avenue in Comstock Park. "Everybody knows it -- come in and get a free Slurpee because we are 7-Eleven.
"We've ordered up -- we've purchased extra cups and syrup. I've staffed up for double-coverage all day long. It should be crazy."
Seven-Eleven began selling the sweet frozen concoction called ICEEs in 1965. In 1967, under a licensing arrangement with the ICEE company, the store chain rebranded the drink as the Slurpee.
