CHICAGO (AP) -- Crews are searching for invasive Asian carp near Chicago following several recent discoveries of their genetic material in Lake Calumet.

Water sampling has turned up silver carp DNA in the lake, which is linked by a river to Lake Michigan. The latest find last month triggered a stepped-up effort to find live carp in Lake Calumet, which is beyond an electric barrier designed to keep them out of the Great Lakes.

Teams are using electric jolts to stun fish while sweeping Lake Calumet with half-mile-long nets. Six boats from government agencies and four commercial fishing vessels are taking part in the search.

Spokeswoman Stacey Solano of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says work began Monday and will continue through Thursday. No Asian carp have been found thus far.
