O.K. Conference principals approve realignment.

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) - After three failed votes over the past eight months (including the last three votes each going down to defeat by one single ballot), the O.K. Conference principals Thursday approved a realignment proposal which will change the high school athletic landscape beginning next fall.

Thursday's vote unfolded at Grandville High School.

The new realignment proposal, which was drafted within the past six weeks, was voted on by the principals first.

It went down to defeat 39-11.

A member of the council then brought back one of the previous proposals for a re-vote.

That one passed by a vote of 38-12.

Once Thursday's vote is approved by the Boards of Education next month, the O.K. Conferences will realign beginning in the 2012-2013 school year.

The conference will now consist of six divisions of six teams, one division of 8 teams and one division is 7 teams.

"We're excited," said Jim Haskins, who serves as the O.K. Conference commissioner. "It's been over a year in the works. Our first vote was last February and some miss-communication amongst the members caused the defeats of the other ballots."

The O.K. Conference principals are glad this vote is finally behind them.

"It's is a great day for the conference," said Dan Zang, Rockford High School principal. "There are some many other things that go on in the league beyond athletics. It took us a while to get here, but we're finally moving forward as a conference."

Here's how the O.K. Conferences will look starting in the fall of 2012:
