(BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER) - A Battle Creek man died Wednesday night when police said he was shot playing a drinking game with friends.

Nicholas R. Ullrich, 34, of Battle Creek, died from a single gunshot wound to the head about 10 p.m., according to Detective. Lt. Austin Simons of the Battle Creek Police Department.

Ullrich was found at a home in the 400 block of Orleans Avenue where Simons said he and the resident, Samuel Castanier, 34, of Battle Creek were celebrating the birthday of a third man.
Simons said the men were drinking and playing a game with a revolver.

The gun was loaded with a single cartridge and then the men would spin the cylinder, point it at another of the players and pull the trigger.

He said the men believed they were safe by looking at the cylinder before the trigger was pulled but apparently momentarily forgot that the loaded chamber advances when the trigger is pulled.

"When you have people drinking and playing with a gun, it never ends up any good," Simons said.

Ullrich was pronounced dead at the scene and Simons said Castanier was located at the home of his parents and arrested.
He is being held in the Calhoun County jail on charges of open murder.

Simons said the handgun was recovered.
