WALKER, Mich. (WZZM)-Most ice cream shops are closed for the season, but one opened its doors Sunday for a special cause.

Ayla Marie was nine months old when the Kent County Undersheriff says she was attacked by her mother's boyfriend. The little girl suffered a traumatic brain injury and will need months of rehabilitation.

Sunday, workers at Scoops Ice Cream Shoppe in Walker frantically filled cones as part of a fundraiser for Ayla. Hundreds of people from as far away as Wayland and Lowell lined up to eat and donate.

"We want to help out. [Ayla's mother has] got a ton of medical bills coming in and she's not working. She's at the hospital with her daughter who's in the intensive care unit non-stop, and she's got bills flowing in," said owner Emily Griesa. "It's ice cream, $2 to $3 a pop isn't going to do too much. But we want to do as much as we can."

Owners of the business say the response was so overwhelming, they had to extend the benefit another hour. The shop collected more than $1,500 Sunday to help pay for Ayla's care.

Workers also delivered ice cream to Ayla and all the other patients in her hospital wing who weren't able to make it out Sunday.
