Ridge Park Charter Academy opened its own voting booths Monday afternoon for a mock presidential election.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Their votes won't count, but students at a Grand Rapids charter school now have a better understanding of the election process.

Ridge Park Charter Academy opened its own voting booths Monday afternoon for a mock presidential election.

Fifth grade students organized the election and invited other students, teachers, and staff to cast their vote.

"We are working on our core democratic values," says Carla Wobma, a fifth grade teacher at Ridge Park. "One of our core democratic values is popular sovereignty -- teaching kids that it's very important to vote and to exercise their popular sovereignty."

Those who were not able to make it to the voting booths today, were provided with absentee ballots.
