GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - An area of Grand Rapids that needs help is getting it.
Officials Thursday cut the ribbon on the first phase of the Southtown Square development - nine townhomes in the Madison Square neighborhood. LINC Community Revitalization Inc. will break ground soon on seven more townhomes, all made possible from $3.2 million in Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds LINC received from the City of Grand Rapids.
During the ribbon cutting, LINC also announced its plans for the $10 million phase two of the Southtown Square development. Phase two will include the construction of 44 living spaces (24 apartments and 20 townhomes) and 13,000-square-feet of commercial space in the Madison Square area. The plans were finalized this month when LINC was awarded $9 million from the State of Michigan in Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) funds. Once phase two of the Southtown Square development is complete, LINC will have invested $13 million dollars in the project.
"As the Southtown area of the city begins its transformation, it is key to have high-quality, lower-cost housing available and also to have adequate space for new business," said co-executive director of LINC, Darel Ross. "LINC is proud to lead the charge in providing this for the area's residents and stakeholders. As this investment is moving the Southtown area forward and allowing its residents and stakeholders the opportunity to succeed."
Ross told WZZM 13 that at LINC "we make sure we focus on people, place and then provide opportunities so it's not just about building physical structures - not just about connecting with people it's making sure that were aligning all of that for ultimate community impact."
