The Living Baseball Card.
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A Grand Rapids company hopes it has found the next big thing in sports marketing. "We have tens of thousands of dollars put into this," says executive producer Corey Niemchick. "We have a lot of skin in the game because we believe in this."
The product is called the Living Baseball Card. Larger than traditional baseball cards, it is a snapshot of the player's career in the game. But what makes it different is a pull-out dvd with a lengthy interview with the player about his life in and outside of baseball. "One of the things we found out is there are stories that are very interesting that in many instances don't have anything to do with baseball," says John Mooy, who conducts many of the interviews for the company. "Truly everybody does have a story."
The Living Baseball Card company has already conducted dozens of interviews with former ballplayers, who are financially compensated for their involvement. There are plans to interview many more as interest in the product grows. "We believe we're truly on the cusp of this thing breaking open because now more and more players are interested," says Niemchick. "We just had the Phillies and the Yankees call us. (Teams) will have a Willie Horton night or a Goose Gossage night and they'll get a sponsor to back it. They'll buy 10,000 Goose Gossage cards and give them to the first 10,000 people that come through the door. They'll use it as a promotional night."
The cards are also available to purchase on the company's website.
"We believe this is going to bust open and it'll be the next big baseball item," says Niemchick. "It'll be the next bobblehead."
