Red Cross blood donations are down over the holidays.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- As temperatures drop, so do blood donations in West Michigan.

That's why the American Red Cross held a blood drive in Grand Rapids Friday.

The Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood in the nation, collecting and processing 40% of all donations.  The organization supplies blood to hospitals in West Michigan outside of Kent County.

Red Cross workers say the need for blood is constant. They say with the busy holiday schedules and winter weather, it's even tougher to maintain the supply.

"We have a need for blood in the U.S. -- every two seconds somebody needs blood," Ashley Minor, donor recruitment representative with the American Red Cross."

Red Cross workers say the blood types in highest demand include O-positive, O-negative, A-negative and B-negative.

The American Red Cross in Grand Rapids will hold its next blood drive from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on March 5. The blood drive will be at the Red Cross office at 1050 Fuller Ave. NE in Grand Rapids.
