GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Friday marks 35 years since the historic winter storm that blasted Michigan with two feet of snow and trapped people inside their homes for days.
The Blizzard of 1978 storm shut down down school, work, and travel for millions of people in Michigan and much of the eastern third of the nation.
To commemorate the 35th anniversary, The Mitten State apparel company is selling t-shirts that say "I survived the blizzard of '78." The Grand Rapids business is encouraging people to visit the company Facebook page to enter a t-shirt giveaway and share their memories of the big blizzard.
"Someone posted their friend had a broken car window and when they were finally able to get back to the car, their entire car was filled up with snow," says Will Bransdorfer, co-Founder of The Mitten State. "We've got other people that would talk about how they'd share the neighborhood snowmobile to get back and forth to the grocery store because literally all the roads were closed and people's power was out. They were just huddling around fire places, playing board games and having fun like that."
The "I survived the blizzard of '78" commemorative t-shirts sell for $20 each.
