(WZZM) - Eating out and shopping could come with an extra charge this year. Businesses now can choose to charge you 1.5-4% to run your credit card.

In the past, credit companies' legal agreements forced businesses to eat a credit card processing fee. But after a recent court ruling, businesses now have the option to pass that charge onto you.

Marie Catrib's, a busy lunch spot in Grand Rapids, has no shortage of credit card transactions. Manager Egan Farrar says, "we pay a small percentage of that total sale to the credit card company for processing our account and putting it into the guests account."

But Phil Catlett, President of the Better Business Bureau got fed up and went to court. Businesses now have to make it clear they're charging you extra.

Catlett says, "When you want into an establishment there has to be a sign near the front of the entrance saying they pass this extra fee on and it must be printed on your receipt."

As for Marie Catrib's they say they won't add any extra fees onto their customers. They say it's "tacky."
