Grand Rapids Public Schools
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- All 200 of the administrators in Grand Rapids Public Schools are receiving layoff notices -- pink slips -- under the district's recently-passed "transformation plan."
Spokesman John Helmholdt says the notices are going out to principals and and other administrators. But Helmholdt says the pink slips are nothing new. He says administrators have received the notices each year for several years. Helmholdt says he is one of the people who received a notice.
This year, though, administrator positions will be cut as the district goes ahead with plans to close ten schools.
Helmholdt says despite the layoff notices, no one may lose their job. He says planned cuts may be reached through employee retirements.
The district is going forward with plans to reduce the number of schools and cut costs. Leaders hope to save close to $5 million a year through the plan, and up to $22 million over five years.
