  • GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Members of a Grand Rapids group say they will continue to help Haiti even after the accident that killed four local missionaries.

The Catholic community gathered Friday night to support the families of Matt Kutsche, Mary LaPonsie and Jim & Rita Cwengros, who all died in in a car accident in Haiti last month.

Close to 2,000 people filled the Saint Peter and Paul activity center for a benefit to cover funeral expenses for the missionaries. Volunteers say the healing continues and soon the missions will too.

"They would have not wanted us grieving forever so Haiti will go on. We will continue to go," said coordinator Mary Szotko. "We don't have a date yet, but everyone on that team wants to go back. We'll know when it's right."

Friday's dinner and auctions were organized by the organization J's Journey. The prizes were donated by individual community members and local businesses.
