GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Imagine a room filled with virtually thousands of examples of hard-to-find items in just about every antique and collectible area. Starting late next week, you'll be able to find such a place in West Michigan.
The biannual estate & consignment sale put together by Larry Fill Estate Service is always a "collectibles aficionados' playground."
The spring sale will open its doors Thursday, April 11 in Grand Rapids. The event is so popular, people will start sleeping in their cars in the parking lot days before it starts.
"Every estate is different," says Larry Fill, who has been putting together giant estate sales for 36 years. "I never know what's going to go out the door first."
From rare items like a pre Civil War 'magic lantern' to unique items like a camel saddle, this estate sale will literally have something for everybody who walks in the door.
"The excitement of the find; the excitement of the hunt is what drives a lot of collectors today," added Fill.
If you're a sports memorabilia collector, this sale could be a gold mine. There will be tens of thousands of baseball and football cards available, dating from the 1940s to present day.
"There are a lot of very, very hard to find cards in that baseball collection," said Fill.
Perhaps the most impressive items that will be for sale will be more than 16,000 comic books.
"Most of our customers come twice," said Fill. "They'll come the first day and get everything they want, at what they feel is a bargain price, then they come back on the weekend for the real bargains."
You'll be able to find several old toys at this sale as well as furniture, pottery and jewelry.
If you're considering coming to the event, but you'll be a first-time collectible/antique hunter, Fill says the best advice he can give is to plan on spending some time, maintain a good eye and if there's something specific you're looking for, do some research and bring that knowledge with you.
The estate sale will unfold at the West Michigan Design Center, which is located at 3850 29th St. SE in Grand Rapids.
