Second day of evacuations at Aspen Surgical

UPDATE (1:20 pm Wednesday) - Emergency crews are back out at Aspen surgical for a second day.

Aspen cancelled the second shift workers for Wednesday, April 17.

Police and fire scanner traffic indicates the company is evacuating at least a portion of the building.

Kent County Dispatch said emergency crews are on the scene, but it was not clear the exact nature of the emergency.

UPDATE (AP)  -- Officials say 13 people taken to a hospital after being sickened at a West Michigan medical supply manufacturing business have been released from care.

Caledonia Township Fire Chief Brian Bennett tells The Associated Press in an email that the cause of the illnesses Tuesday night isn't known. He says air quality monitoring is planned Wednesday at Aspen Surgical.

Crews responded about 9:45 p.m. following reports of employees having trouble breathing at the facility in the Caledonia area, about 15 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. They evaluated or treated 63 people at the scene and 13 were taken to a hospital.

Bennett said people reported respiratory problems, headaches and other conditions.

A hazardous materials team that responded didn't find hazardous chemicals in the air, but the facility was ventilated

 

CALEDONIA, Mich. (WZZM) - UPDATE: The Caledonia Fire Chief says 13 people were transported to the hospital with respiratory issues after Hazmat crews were called to an industrial complex in Caledonia. 

None of the injuries is considered life threatening but two of the victims transported were in serious condition.  The 63 employees inside the Aspen Surgical building were evacuated. 

Hazmat crews are still working to determine what chemicals caused the respiratory issues, and how they were released.

CALEDONIA, Mich. (WZZM) -- Emergency responders are on the scene of a hazardous materials situation at an industrial complex near 68th Street and Broadmoor Ave. SE.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department tells WZZM 13 two people were found unresponsive after being overcome by some substance around 10 p.m. Tuesday night in the 6900 block of Southbelt Dr.

According to emergency scanner traffic, flames were seen inside the Aspen Surgical building. Authorities called for an air monitoring device and a hazmat crew to enter the facility.

WZZM 13 will have more information as details become available.
