(WZZM) - Grand Rapids has enjoyed its year of being Beer City USA (or at least sharing it with Asheville, NC). Now it is time to crown Beer City USA 2013.
Grand Rapids and Asheville are back again as defending co-champs, but so is Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor as other Michigan choices. Also in the running is Missoula, Montana, which has beaten Grand Rapids before in online polls, winning a Social Media Tourism Symposium in March.
As a result of being Beer City, USA, Grand Rapids has seen an increase in beer tourism--or beercations. This is when people visit a city for the soul purpose of trying the local beer. These tourists shop in the local stores, go to the local museums, and generally help the local economy.
According to Experience GR, Grand Rapids breweries sold more than 77,000 barrels of beer in 2012, and over 30,000 glasses of beer per week. That is an increase in from 2011.
There are over 347 types of beer served in Grand Rapids, and that is more than Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor.
