WYOMING, Mich. (WZZM) -- Wyoming Police say they have implemented a new policy to send uniformed officers to all public, private and charter schools in the city on a daily basis.

They call it a "School Safety Check" initiative.  Commanders say a uniformed patrol officer will visit each school in the city.  They say the "proactive approach is designed to complement the community policing practices that the Police Department has been using in Wyoming's neighborhoods and schools for the past 20 years."

"In a word, the initiative is about presence," says Lt. James Maguffee in a news release issued Wednesday. "Before we started this program, we would get panicked calls from parents who had seen a police car in a school parking lot. We want to make a positive police presence commonplace in and around all of Wyoming's schools."

Leaders say the program is intended to build relationships with students and parents, and to remind people that police are an available resource that is not just on hand after a crime.
