Grand Rapids - Sunday

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Grand Rapids had its first Gay Pride Parade on Sunday. It drew hundreds of people to downtown Grand Rapids.

While there is already an annual festival, many in the crowd say they wanted to hold the parade to show people they are a member of the community.

Those marching said West Michigan hasn't always been so accepting of their differences and they want to help change the conservative mindset.

Chuck Novak says, "It's an opportunity to share who we are, we bring a color a light that's different, different people, personalities, views."

It's not just the first year for the parade, Bradley Hamilton says it's the first year he felt comfortable coming out.

"The conservative West Michigan mindset is crumbling, giving way to a more open minded community."

Holland is also set to have its first gay pride parade on June 29th.
