SHELBYVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Southbound U.S. 131 was closed for hours Wednesday afternoon and evening following a pair of unrelated accidents.

Allegan County Sheriff's deputies shut down the highway from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at mile-marker 68 in Dorr because of a crash involving a van.

U.S. 131 was also closed for five hours, between Shelbyville and Martin, from an earlier accident involving a semi and a truck. Around 3 p.m. a semi and pick-up truck collided.

Authorities say a semi driver pulled over on the shoulder after a rear tire blew out. Shortly after, a the driver of a pick-up truck veered off the highway and struck the semi from behind.

The passenger in the pick-up truck, a 23-year-old Hudsonville man, was killed immediately. The driver was taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo with unknown injuries. The driver of the semi was not seriously hurt.

U.S. 131 reopened in Shelbyville around 8 p.m. The crash remains under investigation.
