GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- People who live on the streets of Grand Rapids face many risks, but some say the greatest danger is from other homeless people.
"Grand Rapids is getting rough," confirms street resident Paul Kaczorowski. "It's terrible."
Kaczorowski says he was an acquaintance of the homeless man, Steve Spadorcia, found murdered Thursday morning.
"Probably 20 or 30 times, we've sat down to drink a couple beers," he says. "I had no problem with him. He's a nice guy. I liked him."
Police have not released a possible motive for the murder, but Kaczorowski says street people fight over what they consider essentials.
"I've seen people fight over a sip of beer," he says, shaking his head. "Food or who's corner it is."
Most street fights don't end in death, but Kaczorowski says they often lead to lingering injuries.
"I was staying at that bridge over there," he says pointing down river. "Some guy with a boulder just clocked me. Just picked up a boulder and started hitting me. Normally I can handle myself, but I don't like to get into those situations. I'm not scared, but you've got to hope for the best every day."
