GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The City of Grand Rapids is about to become more bike friendly. A three year, $485,000 bike grant was just awarded to the city by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The city hopes the money will help them develop a platform, so it can become an example for other cities in the state, and eventually the country.

One way to continue the effort; bike paths. Since the city laid its first half mile down in 2010, the length of paths for bikers has grown to over 20 miles.  The city has not made decisions on the exact way the money will be divided, but we're told laying more bike paths is just one option.

"This could include civic events, training, pamphlets, curriculum, outreach, advertising, who knows?" said Traffic Safety Manager for the City Christopher Zull. "We have lots of opportunities, as long as we continue to focus on safety and education."

The money will start to be invested into the community as soon as this fall.
