DETROIT (WZZM/AP) -- Wednesday marked Detroit's 312th birthday and the city received a big present from West Michigan. Walker-based super store Meijer is about to open its 203rd store; it's the first inside the city limits.
The $72 million Gateway Marketplace shopping plaza on 8 Mile Road is anchored by Meijer, which officially opens for business at 6 a.m. Thursday.
The development is expected to bring 900 jobs to Detroit, which made history this week as the largest U.S. city to declare bankruptcy. The city's state-appointed emergency manager - seeking to erase as much as $20 billion in debt.
The Meijer at Gateway Marketplace follows the opening of a Whole Foods store in Midtown. A developer also is planning to build apartments, town houses and small-scale retail along Detroit's downtown riverfront. Groundbreaking could come next spring.
