GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) -- UPDATE: Karin Tarqwyn, the investigator hired by Michael McCarthy to find his missing dog Bodhi, tells WZZM 13 News that a fisherman found the body of Bodhi in Lake Michigan on Friday.

(WZZM) - His picture is all over Facebook; a dog named Bodhi who's been missing from Grand Haven for a week. On Friday, Michael McCarthy took an unusual step, by hiring a nationally known investigator and her crew of dogs to look for Bodhi near Lake Michigan.

"He's been like my child, he's been with me through every failed relationship, he's been my best friend," says McCarthy.

Bodhi disappeared last Friday. "He was going to the bathroom on the side of the house and I came back within 10 seconds and he was completely gone," says McCarthy. " I searched consistently for about four days, walked about 40 miles."

For McCarthy it was a desperate search requiring desperate measures. He decided to hire Lost Pet Professionals, a search group from Nebraska that specializes in finding lost dogs.

"It was just an emergency situation, so we drove 14 hours to get here," says Karin Tarqwyn, a private investigator with Lost Pet Professionals. "Unlike a missing person where you have the sheriff and support groups, when a dog goes missing typically you have yourself and maybe some neighbors and friends."

McCarthy paid for the search, by raising $2,000 from Bodhi's Facebook page.

Lost pet professionals say they find a resolution 90% of the time, but that doesn't necessarily mean a happy ending. Just minutes after their search began, Bodhi's scent was found near the lake.

"More than likely Bodhi went into the water," says Tarqwyn. "It's likely that he drowned."

"If we found him, that would have been amazing, but the other answer is closure," says McCarthy.

The same lake that Bodhi had his first swim, may now be his final resting place. Even though Bodhi is believed to have drowned, his owner would still like to find his body.
He's asking everyone to keep an eye out on Lake Michigan.
