ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A handful of GRPD officers were off the streets and on the green Friday for their annual Cops Fore Kids golf outing.

About 50 children and teenagers teamed up with officers for a nine hole scramble at Gracewil Country Club. Participants included juvenile offenders who are on probation, as well as children from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Grand Rapids.

Organizers say the event gives a face to the officers patrolling city streets.

"A lot of these kids, the only time they see cops is in their cop cars, maybe a relative, aunt or uncle getting arrested and there's that adversarial role going on with kids and the cops," explains Gabe Reister, a court supervisor. "Here, they have two or three hours where they can have conversations with them about their lives and what's going on, so it just gives them a different light to see cops in."

The event wrapped up with lunch and prizes for the two top teams.
