I-96 and Alpine Ave.
WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- Alpine Avenue reopened nearly eight hours after a deadly crash involving multiple vehicles. Traffic resumed around 6:45 p.m. Friday.
Hours earlier at 11 a.m., Michigan State Police say a GMC pick-up truck struck construction barrels on northbound U.S. 131 and continued onto westbound I-96 and exited onto Alpine Avenue. The truck sideswiped a Honda and rear-ended a Saturn. The truck then traveled across Alpine Avenue, through a guardrail, and struck a utility pole sending traffic signals crashing to the roadway.
The driver of the GMC pick-up truck is identified as Peter Flemings, 61, of Grand Rapids. He died at the scene.
A child in the back seat of the Saturn is hospitalized in critical condition. The driver and a front passenger in the Saturn are listed in stable condition.
The occupants in the Honda were not hurt.
It's unclear if a medical condition caused the Flemings to lose control of his vehicle.
