GRAND RAPIDS, (WZZM) -- Police have released the name of a scuba diver who drowned in the Grand River. The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. Saturday off the 6th Street Dam.
Robert Schoemaker, 29, was diving when his two friends on the riverbank noticed him surface in distress without his oxygen regulator in his mouth. Shoemaker was pulled back below by the strong current.
The two others tried but were not able to reach Shoemaker because of turbulent water. They called 911 and Grand Rapids Firefighters pulled Shoemaker from the river about 10 minutes later.
An investigation shows Shoemaker's equipment was all in proper working order. None of the three divers had a city permit to dive in the river, however they will not be charged.
