Grand Rapids Christian senior wide receiver Drake Harris.
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) The Grand Rapids Christian Eagles are the defending state champions in division 3. And scary as it sounds, they might be even better in 2013 than they were in 2012.
USA Today High School Sports has already ranked GR Christian number 1 in the state regardless of class. The Eagles return nine starters from their defense and two division one players including perhaps the best wide receiver in the country in senior Drake Harris.
"Four years ago when we came here, we wanted to be thought of as one of the best teams in the state," says head coach Don Fellows. "USA Today has us ranked one and the kids feel the pressure. We'll try to win as many football games as we can. With a schedule like ours, we can't worry about rankings. We're going to get everybody's best shot."
Great things will be expected from Harris, the silky smooth receiver that had every college program in America recruiting him until he picked the University of Michigan. "I know that I'm going to have to play great every game. I know that everybody's going to take their best shot at me and the defensive backs are going to play hard against me. I can't take any plays off and I have to play hard on every play."
Senior Tommy Doles, who has committed to Northwestern University, is back to anchor the line on both sides of the ball. He and Harris will assume leadership roles in 2013. "We did lose a great senior class last year," says Doles. "A lot of leaders but I really like the way we look coming up. We tasted (the championship). Now we definitely want to get back there. We can't get complacent. And we can't expect that anything will be given to us. We have a target on our backs now."
The Eagles' schedule isn't an easy one. They open with defending division 4 state champion Grand Rapids South Christian and play Muskegon in week 2.
