GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Experience Grand Rapids celebrated the kickoff of Restaurant Week Monday with a good old fashioned corn-on-the-cob eating contest at the Downtown Market.
Every year Restaurant Week beings with some sort of food eating contest, and every year WZZM 13 Peter Ross has managed to win.
Corn-on-the-cob was selected to recognize this year's theme of farm-to-fork. The contestants had two minutes to eat as much corn as possible. Competitors included community leaders and local media personalities
After the bell Peter Ross got off to an earlier lead, quickly devouring each cob like a human typewriter, but after the two minutes was up the contest was too close to call and had to go to the judges.
And the winner was Curtis Groth of WLHT, who earlier had drank a vat of butter to intimidate the contestants. Peter Ross was left stunned, but quickly said, "Rematch." The only thing left for him was to floss.
Restaurant Week officially starts August 14 and runs for ten days.
