DETROIT (AP) - The state appeals court has ruled in favor of a western Michigan pastor, saying he wasn't obligated to tell authorities about child abuse reported by a member of his church.

In a decision released Friday, the court said John Prominski is protected under Michigan clergy law because the disclosure was considered to be confidential. He can't be charged with failing to report suspected abuse.

Prominski is pastor of Resurrection Life Church in Ionia, east of Grand Rapids. A woman told him in 2009 that her husband likely was abusing her daughters. She wanted advice but authorities weren't alerted.

The pastor's attorney, Bruce Block, says no report was made because the allegations were sketchy.

After another incident in 2011, Prominski told the woman to contact police or he would.
