  • GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A new program in Grand Rapids is giving parents a chance to help their kids thrive in school.

It's called Parent University and it's a partnership between the community organization, Believe 2 Become and Grand Rapids Public Schools.

Several parents and volunteers will go out into the community and recruit parents.

"What you will see is our ambassadors knocking on doors. We've asked them to recruit three to five parents and register them for classes," says Emmanuel Armstrong, a counselor with the GRPS.

Parent University is just what the title says: it's classes for adults or parents to teach them how to help children thrive in school. "This is a city-wide initiative, not just for parents with students in GRPS."

Parents can go online to the Believe 2 Become website and register for classes right now. Most of them start in early October and are free.

And it's not just about getting parents involved. It's about making a parent feel better about themselves.

"We understand that if adults are strong and stable, then we're going to create a better student," says Armstrong.
