Muskegon, Mich. (Sept. 22, 2013)

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- WZZM 13 is working to clarify and separate two different organizations, both that are refereed to in short as Elks Lodges.

There are three Elks Lodges near Muskegon: One on Pontaluna Road in Norton Shores, one in downtown Grand Haven, and the one on Ottawa Street in Muskegon where three people were killed Sunday morning.

Reports on the shooting and headlines in newspapers gave members of the Grand Haven Elks Lodge a scare Sunday morning.

"We heard that it was the Elks Charity Lodge," said one Grand Haven member. "Periodically there is some confusion."

Two organizations both call chapters an Elks Lodge: The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America, with lodges in Norton Shores and Grand Haven.

The Lodge on Ottawa Street in Muskegon is part of The Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World.

"Their logos are similar to ours and the best thing we can do is damage control," said Jack Frost, chairman of the advisory committee for B.P.O. of the U.S.A.

Jack Frost, also with the B.P.O. of the U.S.A., says his organization is the older of the two, and when lodges don't properly display the initials of their parent organization, it causes confusion. "The word Elks is on the side of the building and you do not know what it is. The short cut of Elks is how people refer to it."

Frost says it's not the first time he's had to try and separate the B.P.O. of the U.S.A. from the Improved B.P.O. of the world.

And while for now "Elks" is still on the Ottawa Street sign, members say this is what they want to be called: "Charity Lodge 1397."
