GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The Grand Rapids Fire department says a fire that displaced several families Monday morning started in the kitchen.

It happened at a six unit apartment building on Bridge Street NW near Lane Avenue, just after 5 a.m.

Firefighters say the fire was on the first and second floors of the building when they arrived. Flames damaged most of the complex and caused a partial collapse of the roof.

12 people were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting the families with clothing and lodging.

Firefighters say the close proximity of the surrounding buildings made it difficult to fight the fire. They evacuated two surrounding homes while they were at the scene, though the fire was kept from spreading to those structures.

Emergency crews closed Bridge Street near Lane Avenue while they fought the blaze. A part of Bridge Street has since reopened.
