GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A Grand Rapids woman is in the hospital in a medically induced coma after police say she was beaten by her ex-boyfriend.
Police say Elizabeth Batchelder, 18, went to her ex-boyfriend's home in the 200 block of Sweet Street NE around 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Grand Rapids Lt. Pat Merrill tells WZZM 13 News Adam Phillips, 22, beat Batchelder with his fists and crushed several bones in her face. Merrill says Batchelder is three months pregnant.
Wednesday night we talked with Batchelder's family. They say neighbors described to them what happened. "He didn't just beat her," said Brian Batchelder, Elizabeth's father "He grabbed her by the head and was smacking it into the floor."
Elizabeth's grandmother, Joanne Smith, says Elizabeth's 18 month old daughter witnessed the brutal attack, "She was almost dead so the baby had to watch it all, "said Smith.
"When I brought her home police informed me she needed to be washed up she had blood on her feet," says Brian Batchelder.
Investigators believe Elizabeth recently left the relationship and was seeing a new man. Her grandmother says she wasn't dating anyone, had a few guy friends, and Phillips was overly jealous. "No woman should have to go through this. If someone is overly jealous, if someone hits you once, they are going to hit you again. " said Smith.
Adam Phillips is expected to be arraigned Thursday.
