NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia (WZZM) -- The most advanced aircraft carrier in history will bear the name of President Ford. The christening for the USS Gerald R. Ford is this weekend in Virginia.
WZZM 13's Lee Van Ameyde is covering the event and he arrived at the Newport News Shipyards Thursday afternoon.
The USS Gerald R. Ford is the first of the 'Ford class' of carrier. The words used to describe the ship are as big as the vessel: Massive, mightiest, most advanced and costliest.
This is something that has not happened for a long time, the christening of a whole new class of ship. The USS Ford is just the first of a new class, with the USS Kennedy and the USS Enterprise next in line. Another aircraft carrier, also named the Enterprise recently returned Newport News, Virginia after 51 years of service, which is how long the USS Gerald R. Ford is expected to be around.

This summer in Grand Rapids, the Navy used the occasion of President Ford's 100th birthday celebration to reveal a detailed model of the new carrier. The commander of the Gerald R. Ford was there along with the former president's daughter, Susan Ford Bales. She is what is called the sponsor of the new carrier and has worked closely with the shipbuilders. She will officially christen the ship.
Friday, Lee Van Ameyde will be getting a tour of the new carrier, and then on Saturday, WZZM 13 will show the christening ceremony.
