GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- "Deer widows" and many other females are flocking to a holiday tradition, the Beneath the Wreath sale.

The charity shopping event, now in its 28th year, is underway this weekend at the St. Nicholas Cultural Center at 2250 East Paris Avenue SE.

It is put on by the Junior League of Grand Rapids and each of the 30+ selected exhibitors donates 15% of the their sales to league charities, including the YWCA Domestic Abuse Center, Kids in the Kitchen, and the Junior League Wellness Adventure Yard.

Ladies Night events are underway Friday in East Grand Rapids' Gaslight Village shopping district. Many merchants are offering discounts, special promotions and wine.

"We're kicking off the holiday season with kind of a bang," said Melissa Sells of Hot Mama.

Other weekend happenings with a female focus include theatrical performances. Musicals include "West Side Story" at DeVos Place and "The Sound of Music" at The Civic Theatre.
