GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- An economist says residents of Michigan have reason for optimism as we look ahead to the economy in 2014.
"We're doing better than other parts of the country now and I think we've got some momentum behind us," said Mitch Stapley Wednesday. Stapley is the chief investment officer of Fifth Third Asset Management, based in Grand Rapids.
He acknowledges uncertainty over Obamacare may cause consumers to pull back, "a bit on the spending side until they get a clearer picture," of what their health insurance will cost them.
However, Stapley says the fundamental pillars of Michigan's economy: manufacturing, travel and agriculture, are all doing well. "We've got a lot of good stuff going on-- positive stuff," he said.
