KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - On "Small Business Saturday," consumers are encouraged to do more of their holiday shopping at the local Ma & Pop shops. To raise more awareness about the benefits, a showcase was held at Celebration Cinema South.
Celebration Cinema started small in Grand Rapids, and Saturday, the South Theater was packed with people who got to know 21 local businesses trying to make it big, too. "The purpose was to give a space and an opportunity to share the products," said Organizer Tarona Guy. She also owns Amazing Great Vacations out of Kalamazoo.
The West Michigan business owners advertised to thousands of movie-goers; some of whom saw it as a chance to knock a few items off their gift lists. "They're excited about getting some early shopping done for the holiday season, and it's just been great; they've been very welcoming," continued Guy.
Why shop local? According to the West Michigan Group, Local First, money spent here, is 73% more likely to stay here. Less of it goes out of state, and out of country.
"Local businesses are pretty much the backbone of the communities; without that , the major corporations would step in and you really won't get the one-on-one you're used to," said Word Grrl Owner Brandon Lowe. For him, it's also about living the American Dream.
