Kent County snowplow out on Thursday Dec. 13

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Snow and cold are creating icy driving conditions. Many brave enough to get out today quickly regret their decision. Plow drivers out on the road can't get any relief. After clearing a road, they say, the wind quickly puts the snow right back where it was.

"This is probably the most intense winter storm we've had so far," Jerry Byrne, with Kent County Road Commission says 80 truck drivers have been plowing since 4 in the morning.

"Some individuals have gone over the roads 4 or 5 times today and it looks like they haven't gone over them at all."

Byrne says if the snow continues, the county may be in 'deep' --financially.

"We've spent half of our winter budget already but of course we've had half the snow, if winter quits we'll be fine, if it keeps on, we'll have financial issues comes spring."

Some residents opted to do their shoveling tomorrow. While some are learning a new strategy--"Make sure your snow blower is blowing to the east, otherwise it will blow right in your face."

Nate with Life EMS Ambulance says a common mistake is not dressing for the temperature for something small like --getting the mail or newspaper.

"If someone slips and falls outside and they're underdressed, it doesn't take long in sub zero temperatures for their skin to freeze and get frost bit."

While many residents are safe inside, others embraced the winter weather by doing a little cross country skiing.
