GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Some school districts, including Grand Rapids Public, are cancelled for a second day because of the snow and extreme cold. Grand Valley State University has also said it will remain closed Tuesday.
The weather extended the holiday break by several days-- you'll recall many students had the Friday off the day before Christmas break because of an ice storm.
Virtually every school district was closed Monday and visibility was a key issue, not the extreme cold. The Forest Hills District busses about 7,000 students every day. Superintendent Dan Behm said the real worry was the wind whipped snow.
"The issue for Monday was visibility and what the conditions are going to be this morning and this afternoon throughout the day, but it was not the wind chill factor itself," said Behm.
Many districts, including Forest Hills, pulled the plug on school Sunday afternoon, giving students and staff plenty of notice. However, many other districts will wait until Tuesday morning to make their final calls.
