KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) -- A persistent fire continued to smolder Tuesday night inside a CVS Pharmacy. Flames were spotted around 6 p.m. at the store on the corner of Eastern Avenue and 52nd Street SE.

An employee tells WZZM 13 a water pipe broke and fell onto electrical wires, sparking fire, which sent flames shooting through the roof and caused heavy smoke.

"The fire alarms just started going off and we were told to evacuate the building so that's what we did," a CVS Pharmacy intern told WZZM 13. "A few minutes later we saw the smoke and shortly after that we saw flames."

The CVS is at the busy intersection and many people watching from surrounding stores and restaurants.

Firefighters said water was flowing through hoses well, but the cold was causing their oxygen regulators to freeze, making it hard to get air from the canisters.

The store was evacuated and no customers or employees were hurt. Eastern Avenue and 52nd Street were closed for hours as crews worked to extinguish the fire.
