Downtown Grand Rapids skywalk. (Jan. 9, 2014)
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- After days of sub-zero temperatures, the polar vortex is starting to loosen its grip on West Michigan. But as temperatures slowly start to climb, thawing problems are arising, including frozen pipes and burst water mains.
Around 1 p.m. Thursday, water began pouring through the ceiling above the skywalk that connects the PNC Bank building to the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.
The leak was caused by a burst fire suppression pipe, and had slowed to a trickle by 2 p.m. Part of the ceiling drywall had collapsed and a Dumpster was placed under the hole to collect the remaining water.
Property management told WZZM 13 the entire ceiling will need to be removed in that area of the skywalk and a professional cleaning company was called to clear up the mess.
A water pipe burst Wednesday morning, closing the entrance to the Kent County Jail. Water main breaks were also reported Thursday in Grandville and Manistee, where U.S. 31 was closed for hours.
