Speedway at Alpine Ave. & 3 Mile, Walker, Mich. (Jan. 9, 2014)
WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- Speedway employees say the recent harsh weather is to blame for a fuel outage affecting at least three area gas stations.
Two stations on Plainfield Avenue and one at 3 Mile and Alpine Avenue were completely out of fuel Thursday afternoon. Wednesday, the 3 Mile station was selling premium fuel only, but at the price of regular gas.
We contacted Patrick DeHaan from Gasbuddy.com to find out the reason behind the outage, "Speedway being a subsidiary of Marathon, Marathons refinery in Detroit has suffered from a couple setbacks. Two of the units to my knowledge are basically producing less gasoline."
DeHaan says the weather is also a factor, "We have 6 regional refineries that have suffered from the cold weather various shut down issues or various maintenance issues."
WZZM 13 News contacted Marathon about the problems and received the following statement from Stefanie Griffith from the company's Public Affairs Department, "As a result of road conditions, we are experiencing isolated outages at Speedway stations. We are doing everything we can to ensure fuel supply."
In addition to dealing with sporadic outages, consumers also so a significant price jump at the pump. Regular unleaded was selling for $3.08 Thursday morning, but had increased to $3.45 at some stations by mid-day.
DeHaan says he anticipates prices will drop again by next week.
