PORTAGE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Three people are recovering in West Michigan hospitals after a crash on I-94.

It happened around 7:54 Thursday night in the westbound lanes between S. Westnedge Avenue and Oakland Drive.

Police on the scene say a pickup truck lost control and hit the center median barrier. A chain reaction caused a total of six vehicles, including a semi, to either crash or slide off the road.

High speeds, tailgating and icy road conditions were major factors in the crash, according to police. Officers ask drivers to slow down and leave plenty of room between themselves and the car ahead of them.
